Who we are

We’re three IT technicians who repair and refurbish business computers for a living. We started Last Boot because we kept seeing the same thing at work. Companies were paying to have old equipment hauled away, had no record of what happened to the drives, and were giving away machines that were still worth money.

The name In computing, the last boot is the final time a machine powers on. We handle that step with a documented NIST SP 800-88 process, a certificate naming every drive, and people who know what’s on them.

Questions we get asked

Do you really cover the whole metro?
Yes: Cook, DuPage, Lake, Will, Kane, McHenry and Kendall. We’re based in Lombard, so DuPage and western Cook are our shortest runs, but we’re out across the metro every week and a bigger lot travels fine. Outside those seven, ask anyway and we’ll tell you straight whether the trip makes sense.
Our IT team wipes them already. Why pay someone else?
A factory reset doesn’t reliably remove data, and on solid-state drives it often leaves recoverable blocks behind. The bigger gap is evidence. If something ever surfaces, you need more than “we wiped them”: you need a record naming each drive. We can purge and certify the machines worth reselling, and destroy the rest.
A recycler collects ours for free. What is the difference?
Free recyclers rarely document individual drives, and some pass equipment downstream before anything gets destroyed. The liability stays with you no matter how many hands the hardware went through. You’re also giving away machines we’d pay you for.
We only have a handful of machines.
There’s no minimum anywhere in the service area. Even five recent machines are worth a same-week collection. For older lots, or ones with nothing resellable in them, there is a per-drive destruction fee that we quote before we collect, and collection is free above a threshold we’ll tell you up front.
How do I know the data will not get sold on?
Every drive goes onto your manifest at collection, stays secured, and is destroyed before any hardware gets resold. You get the serial list and the certificate, and you’re welcome to come and watch the destruction itself.
We are a medical practice. Can you handle ePHI?
Yes, once a Business Associate Agreement is signed, and nothing leaves your office before it is. Using a disposal vendor without a BAA in place is itself a violation on your side, so we won’t skip it just to move faster. We keep destruction records for six years.
Our IT company handles this for us.
They may already be passing it to a firm like ours. We work behind a number of IT providers: they refer the disposal, we handle the collection and the paperwork, and the certificates can go out under their name. Tell us who they are and we’ll approach them directly instead of going around them.
